Caring for Solid Wood Furniture Through New England Winters

A solid wood side table near a frosted window with a humidifier and a soft cloth, winter light

Quick answer: Forced-air heat dries wood fast, so keep indoor humidity around 35–45% with a humidifier, move pieces away from radiators and wood stoves, and oil or wax once before winter and once in spring. Small seasonal gaps in panels are normal and close in summer.

Near the stove

Keep a side table at least three feet from heat.

Sideboards

Check the doors of a sideboard in spring as wood swells.

Bookcases

Leave an inch behind a bookcase on outside walls.

Monthly

Dust with a dry cloth and wipe up snowmelt promptly.

A month-by-month guide for the heating season

Central Massachusetts homes may run the heat from October to April, and that long stretch of dry air is the biggest challenge for solid wood.

  • October: before turning on the heat, oil or wax tabletops and the tops of sideboards. Move pieces away from radiators and baseboard heaters.
  • November–December: start the humidifier and aim for 35–45% indoor humidity. A small hygrometer helps you check.
  • January–February: the driest months. Watch for hairline gaps in tabletops and panels; they are normal and close again in summer.
  • March: wipe away winter grit and salt tracked in on boots, especially on entry benches and console legs.
  • April–May: as the heat goes off, wood swells slightly. Give doors and drawers a few weeks before adjusting anything.

Wood stoves and fireplaces

Radiant heat dries the near side of a piece faster than the far side, which can cause warping. Keep furniture at least three feet from a stove or open hearth and turn side tables every few months so wear and drying stay even.

Choosing pieces for cold-climate homes

Solid wood with an oil or wax finish is forgiving in New England because it can be refreshed at home. Look through our tables & desks and sideboards & consoles — all newly built, vintage-inspired designs — and check each listing for finish and care notes.
